Thinkin' 'bout Inkin' (with David McGuire)

why did you decide to take webcomicsareawesome down a few years ago? did you look back at it and think 'this is too bitter and and angsty and has too many layers of irony to it' or is there more to it

The reason I took it down is it’s only 8 pages long, unfinished, and I never plan on finishing it. Basically, I didn’t want people constantly asking me to finish it.

But I don’t think it was too bitter or angsty at all. The irony was the entire point. Nobody who truely loved webcomics in the mid 2000s would dare take webcomics serioiusly.  Webcartoonists were still trying to figure out what kind of an animal “webcomics” was. We didn’t WANT to be taken seriously yet.

And yet, there were people out there writing books about the “history” of webcomics or examining the “medium” of webcomics!  Barf!

The concept of Webcomics Are Awesome was that if someone writes a book about webcomics, it should be:

  1. Itself, a webcomic.
  2. Overly obsessive about webcomics, yet done with zero research.
  3. Entirely disrespectful of the very idea of a book about webcomics existing in the first place.

I stand by everything that I posted online, but I changed my mind about a lot of what I had planned for future scripts. Suddenly, I had this script for a comic that I had edited nearly all of the content out of!

Also, I didn’t want people to think I was complaining about How to Make Webcomics, because I love that book.

TL;DR: I really wanted to do Gastrophobia instead.
